Cleaning Laptop 2: Return the Glow to Your Laptop

Filed Under: Home, Tips    by: admin

In continuation to Cleaning Laptop 1, I noticed that the top of  my laptop, basically the top casing part was looking a bit dull and dirty.

Dull... Dirty...

So I decided to think of a way to bring back the glow to it. Inspiration struck and I gathered the tools.

The tools.. Looks good for removing eye makeup.. :p

The tools.. Looks good for removing eye makeup.. :p

I’m not too sure if this is going to work. Just wanted to try it out. The tools consisted of:

  1. Facial cotton pads.
  2. Wet tissue (non-alcoholic). This one is with aloe vera and fragrance free.
  3. Cosmetic olive oil. Mine is Ginvera Bio Lite Beauty. Less greasy and enriched with Camomille. Not that it’s much use but it helps to make the process smell nicer. :)

The assemble looked perfect for removing eye makeup. :D All these can be easily obtained from your local pharmacy or departmental store. I got my cotton pads and wet tissues from Watsons. Olive oil was from somewhere else. But you should have no problem finding it in Watsons.

Now, we’re ready for some scrubbing.. erm.. wiping. Please do not scrub your laptop unless you want to have a sandpaper look!!

First, pour some olive oil onto a piece of cotton pad. Just a few drops but not so much that the cotton is soaked through. The way I gauge is to drip 2 or 3 drops throughout the pad and making sure that the oil does not soak through to the other side. Otherwise, it will be pretty difficult to remove the oil from your laptop later.

Second, wipe your laptop’s top casing with the oiled cotton pad, making sure the whole area gets oiled. There should be a thin layer of oil on the casing and you should see the whole area become quite shiny. If there is not enough oil to go over the whole surface, you can add some more to your cotton pad before wiping it. My advice is not to pour the oil directly on the surface.

Third, after making sure the whole surface is oiled, go over the surface with the cotton pad to wipe up the dirt and dust that’s stuck on it. Your cotton pad should be looking dirty.

Dirty cotton pad...

Dirty cotton pad...

As you can see from the picture above, my laptop is looking pretty shiny from the oil and look at the dirt!

Fourth, repeat the process with new cotton pads until you don’t see any more dirt on them. There is no need to add olive oil after the first oiling. Just use clean cotton pads to wipe till clean and no longer greasy.

By now most of the oil and dirt should be gone. You can feel it with your fingers to check if the surface is still feeling greasy. If you feel that this is enough, you can stop here.

However, I decided to go one step further. Use a piece of wet tissue to wipe over the whole surface. If your wet tissue is too “wet”, it will be advisable to let it air for a while or to squeeze off some of the moisture. As it’s my laptop I’m cleaning here, I do not want to risk having any liquid going into the electronic components.

After wiping over the whole surface thoroughly, I finished off with the cotton pads to dry up the moisture from the wet tissue and clean up any last stubborn grime found on the surface.

Finally, my reborn laptop! Look at the before and after.

Before

Dirty... Dull...

After

Clean... Shiny...

Cleaning Laptop 1: Removing Sticker Residue

Filed Under: Home, Tips    by: admin

Have you ever come across the time when you try to remove some stickers or price tags from your stuff and find that they leave a nasty residue? This is what happened when I tried to remove some starry stickers from my laptop.

Sticker Residue

Sticker Residue

Well actually, this is just one of the many stars that I stick on my laptop.

The solution is simple for me. Use an eraser. Yes, an eraser. Use an eraser to rub the stains. Just use moderate force and rub in circles, starting from the edges and moving inwards.

Rubbing and coming off...

Almost done...

Almost done...

The trick is to rub in circles to rub the sticky stuff together and gather them up. You can sweep off some of the sticky stuff if it becomes too much and is obstructing your rubbing.

Here’s the result.

No stars!!

No stars!!

Done!!

Reinstall Windows XP from Ubuntu

Filed Under: IT, Tips    by: admin

I was trying to reinstall Windows XP on my Acer laptop after installing Ubuntu. So what I did was to use the recovery disk from Acer and do a recovery. Unfortunately, after the recovery I could not get my laptop to bootup. It was stuck at bootup with an error message that goes something like “GRUB error 17, cannot load GRUB”.

Thinking that something went wrong during the recover process, I ran the recovery a second time. The same problem occurred. After some googling, I found the solution.

  1. Get a Windows installation disk. If you don’t have, try borrowing from a friend.
  2. Bootup with the disk and go into the Recovery console.
  3. In the dos prompt, type “FIXMBR”. It’s not case-sensitive so small caps is fine.

This method works well for my case. If you can’t get it to work, try your best friend Google.
